about

I haven’t seen the film of “Holes” since I was a child and I’ve never read it and so I can’t say if either are any good although I do recollect enjoying some of Louis Sachar’s other books as a pre-teen. The name was borrowed from the opening of the book because I wanted something nostalgic, and I like the way it gestures towards some of the imagery in the song.

“Greenlake” was written because I had felt like our songs had been getting increasingly complicated and I wanted to write something short and simple. The whole song revolves around just two chords and doesn’t have much of a structure at all relying instead on a steady (if slightly wonky) groove and a big loud bridge which transitions into a very mellow and calm instrumental outro. I think it ties well into the lyrics which are about settling back into routines and rediscovering yourself after difficult times. I think that “calm after the storm” period is something we don’t see represented that often in music and I hope people find something in there they can relate to from their own experiences.

Lyrics:

Everything stopped, falling away
when you, came back to me.
First, you pick yourself back up off the ground,
fell through the cracks in the wall.
I dimmed the lights untill you couldn't breathe.

Not to be blunt,
but why won't you see that you never believed?
When you, beat yourself down into the ground.
You hit your stride when I
stopped trying to be you and let you be me.

Fill the holes you left in the
hearts of those who never again
will think of us when you didn't leave.

All we've known,
Under snow.
